Recently in Zimbabwe, the 37-year presidency of Robert Mugabe has come to an end. He has not left the country, and his most likely successor has not yet been sworn in, but the transition appears certain. The streets have been filled with citizens celebrating what may be the end of what many have called tyranny and oppression. Everyone is hoping for a new day with better leadership, a restored economy and jobs for all. — Did you know this may be a physical example of what is true in the spiritual world? Let’s look.
Jesus of Nazareth, the only begotten of the Father (John 1:14) has lived among us, died for us, and was raised again on our behalf. He has already ascended to the Father (John 20:17, Acts 1:9) and we are all waiting for him to return again in glory (Luke 9:26).
Satan, the liar and the apparent ruler of this world’s ways (John 8:44, Eph 2:2) appears to be still in charge, for we see so much violence, hatred, and the many outward displays of selfishness in this world. But in truth, Jesus has defeated him already — see Luke 11:17-22 for a methaphorical description of Jesus as the stronger man defeating Satan — and his power is already broken. He has not yet “left the country” but his days are numbered. We wait for Jesus to return (Romans 8:19, 23 and Philippians 3:20) and for the whole creation to be restored to its proper glory.
Until that day, we wait and hope and pray, living as citizens in that kingdom (Phil. 3:20) and working for the eventual completion of the Father’s glorious plan. Let’s be engaged in our work, loving and living as Jesus, as we wait!
